English Summary/英文概要: Starred PW for THE BOY AND THE DOG ARE SLEEPING, “powerful and rare display of visceral, emotional writing,” In this powerful and moving memoir, Nasdijj writes about the love between brothers, a love that saved Nasdijj and his little brother, Shawnee, from being destroyed by the grim reality of their childhood. It is also a book about the world of migrant workers, a world that remains hidden from most Americans but is still very much alive in this country. Nasdijj and Shawnee lost their loving, if flawed Navajo mother to alcoholism and despair at a very young age. They were left in the sometimes indifferent, often abusive and occasionally loving care of their alcoholic father who drove his truck around the country looking for migrant work. Nasdijj and Shawnee occasionally went to school, often encountering the prejudice and cruelty of 1950s white teachers. Sometimes they worked in the fields. For a while they were in juvenile detention. Mostly they were left to fend for themselves in a variety of hostile environments.
